Being Helpful (Grades K-3) Lesson Title: Be Helpful Objective: To recognize how being helpful is beneficial to others and yourself Grade: K/2 Time: 25-30 minutes Materials: Board and Markers, ‘Berenstain Bears: Lend a Helping Hand’ book (a copy is at 1930 Como) 1. Tell the class that we are going to talk about being helpful. As you get older, you can get more and more helpful. People are usually happy when they are helped and you feel good when you help others. 2. Ask the class: What is something you have done to be helpful? (get many responses) How did the person feel when you helped them? How did you feel when you helped them? 3. Do a puppet or role-play where a puppet tries to decide whether to help another puppet. The puppet decides to help. The puppet who gets helped is very happy and thankful. The helpful puppet feels proud. 4. Tell the class we are going to read the ‘Berenstain Bears: Lend a Helping Hand’ book (You can skip pages for time’s sake). Ask the students to see who is helpful in the book? 5. Ask the class: How were Brother and Sister Bear being selfish? Mama Bear thought it was just as important to help others as it is to help yourself. How did she think Brother and Sister could learn this lesson? How did Ms. McGrizz say Brother and Sister could help her? What were some of the cool things in Ms. McGrizz’s attic? How did Ms. McGrizz feel when the cubs were helpful? How did Brother and Sister Bear feel when they helped Ms. McGrizz? 6. Do a puppet play where the puppets help somebody in their neighborhood. 7. Have the students do a puppet play where the puppets help somebody in their neighborhood. OR 8. Have the students draw a picture where somebody is helpful in their neighborhood. 9.. Review the benefits of being helpful. |
