Following Rules (Grades K-2)
Lesson Title: Following Rules
Objective: To review the importance of following rules
Grade: K/2 Time: 25-30 minutes

Materials: Paper and Crayons, Puppets (optional)

1. Review how to make new friends

2. Ask the students what game they like to play. Talk about the rules and why they are important for the game. (Example: You must take turns in Candyland so everyone gets his or her turn. You can’t knock over the game pieces or you won’t know where they were.)

3. Ask the students what are some rules in the classroom. (Use the class rules if they are posted.) Some possible rules: 1) Raise your hand 2) Stay seated 3) Keep your hands and feet to yourself 4) Take turns 4) No name calling 5) Walk quietly in the hallways

4. Explain that if you follow rules, you will learn more and have more fun. Give examples.

5. Make up stories where a student breaks one of the rules. Example: The teacher is reading a story and Bee and Susan go get a drink of water. They broke the stay seated rule. Ask the students why that rule is important. Etc…

6. Optional – Do a puppet play on breaking rules.

7. Ask the students to draw a picture of someone following a rule. (Go around the class and show the pictures while the students are drawing. Remark on why it is important to follow that rule.)
OR
Do a puppet play on following a rule.
8. Tell the class that the more they follow rules, the more they will learn and the more fun they will have. When you break rules, it makes school not as fun and you don’t learn as much.

9. Review the importance of following rules.
