School is Fun (Grades K-2) Lesson Title: School is fun Objective: To recognize the enjoyable parts of school Grade: K/2 Time: 25-30 minutes Materials: ‘Berenstain Bears Go to School’ book (copy at 1930 Como), Paper and Crayons (optional), Puppets 1. Ask students to tell how they felt when they came to school on the first day. Get multiple responses. 2. Do a puppet play on being scared to go to school on the first day. 3. Tell the class you are going to read "Berenstain Bears Go to School". Explain that this is Sister Bear’s first day at school. Ask the students how they think Sister is feeling in the book. Ask them to raise their hands if they think 1) Sister will like school or 2) Sister won’t like school. 4. Read the Story. (Note: You may want to skip pages or paragraphs in the book. Also, you will need to change some lines of the book if you are reading it to a first or second grade class.) 5. Ask the class: 1) How was Sister feeling on the first day of school? 2) How did Sister help the little bear on the bus? 3) What were some things that looked like fun at Sister’s school? What are some fun things to do at our school? 6. Have the students do a puppet play on what they like to do at school. (The puppet could say something like ‘I like to play with clay at school’ or ‘I like when the teacher reads books at school’ etc…) OR 7. Ask the students to draw a picture of what they like to do at school 8. Tell the class that there are many fun things to do at school. As the year goes on, they will find more and more fun things to do at school. 9. Review some of the fun things to do at school. |
