MATERIALS/RESOURCES:
One piece of construction paper for each student
One piece of white paper for each student that says ________________ came to school on the first day and felt ___________.
Red paint or red construction paper
Pre-cut heart shapes

ACTIVITY:
Read the book, The Kissing Hand, to the students. Ask students the following questions after reading the story: was Chester’s mother being
mean by making him go to school; why did Ms. Raccoon want Chester to go to school; why does your family want you to come to school; etc.
Have the students trace their hand onto the construction paper and cut the hand out and paste it on the white paper. (Telling them to be careful
not to cover the words.) Next, students will paste a red heart onto the palm of the hand. The teacher and the counselor can assist the students by writing in the blanks what the children say. ___________ came to school on the first day and felt ___________. Let each student know that
they are important to the class. If you know sign language, teach them how to say, “I love you.”

How did the student change as a result of this lesson? Students will demonstrate that they are an important member of the class.
Information/Comments/Follow-up: Do a check in with students in the next class by having them do a thumbs up, thumbs down, thumbs in the middle. Find out what is happening to cause thumbs down and thumbs in the middle.
