"Wemberly Worried" (Grades 3-5) Lesson Plan Adapted from/Counselor Name: Karen Ward Title of Lesson: Wemberly Worried Quarter: 1st day of school Audience: Classroom Small Group Level: Primary (K-2) Intermediate (3-5) Target Grade: 1st COUNSELING STANDARDS PERSONAL/SOCIAL * Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others. * Students will understand safety and survival skills. COUNSELING COMPETENCY(IES) Demonstrate ways to make and keep friends. : MATERIALS/RESOURCES: The book, Wemberly Worried, by Kevin Henkes. ACTIVITY: Tell the students you are going to read a story called Wemberly Worried. Show them the front of the book. Ask students what are some other feeling words that go along with Wemberly’s expression. (Sad, scared, worried) Have students predict what kinds of things Wemberly might be worried about. After a short discussion, tell the students that everyone’s answer is correct because Wemberly worries about EVERYTHING. Start reading the book. Stop for discussion after you read. Soon, Wemberly had a new worry: school. Have students predict what Wemberly might worry about because of the start of school. Ask the students if they have worries about school starting. Finish reading the story. Next, ask students to tell what happened to Wemberly that made her change her feelings about going to school. (She made a friend.) How did Wemberly and Jewel become friends? (They played together.) It is important for students to be aware that even though Wemberly was worried, she made the first step towards being friendly. Have students brainstorm how to start making a friendship. (Smiling, playing, helping, etc.) EVALUATION: Pretest/Postest: How did the student change as a result of this lesson?
